Following the extreme heat experienced during summer 2025, Unite submitted a Heat Management Plan to improve welfare facilities, work/rest arrangements and heat management across the project. More recently, we submitted a 9-Point Heat Action Plan, continuing to lobby the client and make representations on issues including welfare, workplace temperatures, air conditioning in cranes and plant, transport, hydration and management arrangements during periods of extreme heat.
As a result of Unite's continued engagement, a number of improvements have already been delivered, with further measures currently being progressed.
Hinkley Ancillary Welfare (HAW)
Several improvements have now been made within the Hinkley Ancillary Welfare (HAW) facilities. All integrated air conditioning systems are now operational, a new external cooling unit has been installed to increase cooling capacity, and temporary units are being closely monitored to minimise downtime. Three additional temporary air conditioning units are currently being installed ahead of the forecast hot weather. SWL has also introduced a local Heat Management Procedure, allowing supervision and Unite Representatives to jointly implement additional staff rotation, cooling breaks and service reductions when required. Staff also have access to a dedicated air-conditioned respite room, and the canteen will operate a reduced service while essential flooring works are completed.
Crane and Plant Air Conditioning
Following concerns raised by Unite members, progress has also been made to improve air conditioning in cranes and mobile plant. Outstanding defects continue to be monitored and discussed with Maintenance. Unite will continue lobbying the client and making representations until all reasonable improvements have been delivered.
What We Need From Members
Please continue to follow the site's Heat Management Plan, take the additional breaks communicated by your supervisor, stay hydrated and make full use of the welfare facilities provided.
Record concerns on your **POWRA**, record air conditioning defects on your daily -Plant Operator Check Sheet-, report defects through the normal reporting process and raise any concerns with your supervisor, construction management and your Unite Safety Representative.
Please also help keep the HAW facilities as cool as possible by keeping the fire doors closed wherever practical. This helps the air conditioning operate effectively and, if temperatures remain unacceptable, provides valuable evidence that further improvements are required.
Every POWRA, defect report and Plant Operator Check Sheet helps strengthen Unite's case for further improvements. Thank you to every member who has continued to raise concerns and report issues. Your feedback has directly contributed to the improvements already delivered, and Unite will continue lobbying the client and making representations to secure further improvements for our members.

Nothing about SPS regarding the temperature on double deckers during heat warnings then ?
